Message: “The Heart of Fasting” from Darren Hughes
A message from the series “The Sermon on the Mount.” The idea behind the heart of fasting can take time to reach a consensus. However, it is more than a checklist item for a “good Christian.” This passage is rooted in Jewish tradition and for all future Christians. These two verses help show us the real heart behind why fasting is effective for those desiring more of Jesus.

Jesus loves you! He willingly offered His life as a sacrifice and ransom for mankind. His victory over sin at the cross and over death is why we call Him Lord of lords and King of kings. We worship him as the Word who became flesh and dwelt among us. God still wants to dwell with His people, and that includes you! If you want more information on what salvation means, please send a message or email us.

Message: “Irrational Living ” from Jim Haskell
A message from the series “The Sermon on the Mount.” Irrational Living
Matthew 5:38-48
1. React with Surprising Generosity (Matthew 5:38-42)
38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’[h] 39 But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. 40 And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. 41 If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. 42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.
But even if we have rights, Salt and Light Followers of Jesus are encouraged to react counter culturally by voluntarily giving up their rights in order to be used by God most effectively.
2. Retaliate with Unexpected Kindness (Matthew 5:43-47)
43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor[i] and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47 And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that?
Lessons to Learn for Transformative Living
• Revenge is never as satisfying as it looks.
• Revenge is normally more damaging to the one seeking revenge than the recipient.
• Revenge cancels an open window opportunity to make a statement about our loving and forgiving Heavenly Father.
• Revenge Blocks our Light and dissolves our Salt.
God expects us to not only surrender our rights but to retaliate with radical grace which will seem to unbelievers as irrational.
3. Live with God as Model (Matthew 5:48)
48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
• Realize we are all sinners (Romans 3:23)
• Sin has separated us from God (Romans 6:23)
• Accept God’s Forgiveness (Romans 5:8)
• Trust in Jesus for your Life and Future (Romans 10:9, 13)
• Grow into the person God desires for you (Ephesians 4:15)
We should not live our lives trying to be better than others, but live comparing our lives to The Father and His son Jesus.

Message: “Nurturing a Healthy Marriage” from Jim Haskell
A message from the series “The Sermon on the Mount.” Nurturing a Healthy Marriage
Matthew 5:27-30
1. Precautions (Matthew 5:27-28)
27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’[e] 28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
“You shall not commit adultery.” (Exodus 20:14)
• Realize that no one is immune
• Continue to build your personal relationship with God.
• When you can identify a counselee’s perfume, refer her to someone else.
• Stay away from people of places that tempt you
• In the ministry, an accusation that is false can be almost as damaging as if it were true.
• Give off the vibe/signal that you are not interested
• Go into every meeting you might have with a member of the opposite gender valuing their worth and professional vocational needs but protecting yourself by arranging things that assure you will not be in a private or intimate setting
• Avoid being alone with someone of the opposite gender for rides or meals when at all possible
• Be careful of how you use social media
• If you are struggling in your marriage, go to a professional not a friend of the opposite gender
• Communicate to both in the marriage when contacting by text, DM or email
• Pour yourself into your marriage
In order be immune from adultery and the damage that it can do to your marriage, recognize and learn how to reject lust in its infancy.
2. Actions (Matthew 5:29-30)
29 If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.

Message: “The Destructive Nature of Anger” from Jim Haskell
A message from the series “The Sermon on the Mount.” The Destructive Nature of Anger
Matthew 5:21-26
1. Exposes A Sense of Entitlement (Matthew 5:21-22)
21 “You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ 22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca, is answerable to the court. And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.
“You shall not murder.” (Exodus 20:13)
“‘Anyone who kills a person is to be put to death as a murderer only on the testimony of witnesses. But no one is to be put to death on the testimony of only one witness. (Numbers 35:30)
Our inward attitude greatly influences our outward actions. Minimizing the value of another in an attempt to elevate your own value is self-centered and counterproductive.
2. Impairs Worship (Matthew 5:23-24)
23 “Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, 24 leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.
Vertical worship is affected by human relationships and is authentic when reconciliation occurs.
3. Leads to Judgement (Matthew 5:25-26)
25 “Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still together on the way, or your adversary may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. 26 Truly I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.
Peaceful living is not dependent on being right or winning. We are to take the initiative to create a culture of peaceful relationships.

Message: “The Ingredients of Influence” from Jim Haskell
A message from the series “The Sermon on the Mount.” The Ingredients of Influence
Matthew 5:13-16
“I heard about a recent study showing that the average person will influence eighty thousand people in their lives, positively or negatively.”
If that is correct, what should be our purpose in influencing people and how should we go about doing it?
1. Salty Salt (Matthew 5:13)
13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.
• Flavors
• Purifies
• Preserves
God has called us to make a distinctive difference wherever we are and whatever we do.
2.Visible Light (Matthew 5:14-16)
14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
• Warms
• Illumines
• Radiates
A city on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:14-16)
“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12)
Visible Light cannot be hidden. Light shines brightest when things are the darkest.
Salt and Light people should be just as passionate…but not for physical needs alone, for those with spiritual hunger in a dark and cold impersonal world also!
